Linda! Can I just say 'ditto' to everything you said? Not just any ol' generic ditto, but like the really meaningful kind of ditto like Patrick Swayze would say to Demi Moore in the movie Ghost. :) You are awesome!

3. Thanks! And yeah, that post within a post sure made for a ridiculously long post. I need to chill.

First off, I hate the tilt-a-whirl. It reminds me of a very scary time at Solon Home Days where we thought we were all going to die in a horrible storm.

Second, is your love language "words of affirmation?"

Third, I loved this post even though when I first noticed how long it was I was all, "hmm, should I even read it?"

Fourth and final, you know you're more than enough for me!

I forgot the word "was" in the second sentence.
Ah, heck. I still feel like "enough" today.

I love your comment, Lisa! I know you know exactly how this process goes. "Little kernels of praise" - love this! Ah how these little kernels can fuel us.

A couple side notes: 1) You really do look great as a pregnant lady AND you rock for writing a great grant proposal that woos your mentor!! 2) Okay, is not every conversation with Melanie insightful?! 3) That paper I spoke of was my pre-diss, and it is on the brink of being submitted! Yay! I really am excited about how far it's come, though I was warned to be prepared for anything once it gets into the hands of the editor/reviewers (like, they might deem it too preliminary...or not...or have other issues...who knows?).

Well I was about to leave you comments telling you what an amazing PhD student and writer you are until I read the second half of your blog post. It is definitely a good reminder to reflect on the knowledge that God loves us unconditionally.

Nevertheless, I agree that every now and again it's good to get a "atta boy" from your mentor. I don't think I'll ever forget when Larry wrote me an email in response to a grant proposal I'd sent him to review and he said "very good, very good indeed". Of course, he proceeded to comment about revisions to be made, but that little kernel of praise will last me quite a while.

I shared with Melanie the other day about how so many people at school come up to me and express how excited they are for me that I'm pregnant and they're always saying how good/cute/lovely/glowing I look and things like that. Melanie remarked how funny it is that people are so supportive of one another during certain social rituals that we can all relate to like having babies and getting married. She said it'd be nice to have that kind of support/encouragement also while working on your PhD. I totally agree! I don't think most people understand how draining it can be to get a PhD and that when they see us in the hallway or walking down the street they should be ecstatic that we're pressing on for another day in pursuit of our PhD.

Thanks as always for your thoughtful/insightful blog. I love reading your reflections. And I think you're a fabulous writer--and I know God agrees. :-)
